Components
What goes into an HVAC system and how does it work? To maintain ambient indoor air quality and thermal comfort, each component is hard at work.
Thermostat
The thermostat is the main control for the cooling and heating components of your system. It also helps with zoning, letting you control the temperature in each section of your space.
In the more recent years, the thermostat has become an integral part of “smart homes” wherein programmes can be set on a timer, motion sensors, syncing with other devices depending on usage, and conveniently through mobile apps allowing for multiple user controls from anywhere there is a mobile phone signal.
Return Air
The return air is the air’s first point of contact with the HVAC system. It pulls the air in and delivers it into the heating or cooling compartments to be circulated back to maintain the area’s desired temperature.
Filter
The filter blocks as much debris and dust particles from entering the HVAC system to assure that it continues its optimum function.
Exhaust Outlets
The exhaust outlets expel excess heat produced by the HVAC system to prevent it from overheating. The outlet must be checked regularly to assure that nothing is blocking its vents.
Ducts
The ducts are the passages of the hot or cold air that the HVAC produces.
Electrical Element
The electrical element is what powers the HVAC system and keeps everything running.
Coils
The evaporator coil cools the air pulled in by the air return with a refrigerant and is distributed through the air conditioning unit.
The condenser coil does the opposite; it releases the hot air produced by the process and expells it through the outdoor unit to ensure it does not overheat.
Blower
The blower motor moves the cool and hot air throughout the ductwork, using a fan to circulate the air.
Compressor
The compressor can be found in the HVAC’s outdoor unit and it converts the refrigerant from a gas to liquid and sends it to the coils to be processed and recirculated into the ductwork.
Heat Exchanger
The heat exchanger or combustion chamber is responsible for heating air through electric coils or burner, depending on what your system uses.
